Hand grinder vs. electric for espresso

By · Updated · What changed

On a budget, the grinder question is usually hand or electric. In our data, 3 hand grinders made for espresso cost $109–$259, and 6 electric grinders that can grind for espresso cost $200–$300. Paired with the Breville Bambino, the machine our rules start with at $500, that is the difference between a setup under $500 and one right at it.

Everything below comes from manufacturer spec pages and retailer listings read on Oct 27, 2026. We compiled it; we have not timed or compared these grinders ourselves, so claims about speed or consistency are the makers’ own.

The short answer.

Choose a hand grinder if

  • Every dollar counts: it is how a full setup stays under $500
  • You make one or two drinks a day
  • You want fine adjustment steps for the money, no plug and no motor noise

Choose an electric grinder if

  • You make several drinks a day, or share the machine
  • Grinding by hand every morning sounds like a chore
  • You can spend about $200 or more on the grinder alone

The trade-offs.

Effort and time

This is the real cost of a hand grinder. You turn the handle for every shot, and espresso is the finest, slowest setting. None of the makers publishes a time per dose and we have not timed them, so we leave it there. An electric grinder turns that into a button press.

Adjustment for the money

Around $200, hand grinders publish much finer steps. 1Zpresso lists $199 for the J-Ultra with 8 µm per click. KINGrinder’s K6 lists 16 µm per click for $109. The Baratza Encore ESP has 40 fixed steps, with 1–20 for espresso, per Baratza. The Opus 2 and Turin DF54 are stepless, so fine steps are possible on the electric side too, from about $200.

Consistency

We do not have independent particle-size data for these grinders and will not claim one grinds more evenly than another. One caution from our sources: the Breville Smart Grinder Pro is marketed for espresso, but the community-run Espresso Aficionados guide lists it under “Not Recommended”, and its steps are coarse for espresso.

Noise, power and counter space

A hand grinder needs no outlet and no counter space when it is put away. Electric grinders take a permanent spot, and our notes flag the Encore ESP as louder than flat-burr grinders.

Capacity

Hand grinders hold one dose or a little more: 35–40 g for the J-Ultra and 25–30 g for the K6, per the makers. That is plenty for a double shot. Hopper-fed electrics hold far more, though sources disagree on some figures (Baratza lists 300 g for the Encore ESP’s hopper; retailers list 8 oz).

If we were choosing.

These match what our quiz suggests at $500: a hand grinder to stay under budget, or a $200 electric to land right on it.

Questions

Is a hand grinder better for espresso than a budget electric at the same price?

On paper, around $200 a hand grinder buys finer adjustment. 1Zpresso lists the J-Ultra ($199) with 48 mm burrs and 8 µm per click, while Baratza lists the Encore ESP ($200) with 40 mm conical burrs and 40 steps, half of them for espresso. We have not compared grind quality ourselves, so we go by those published specs.

How much effort does hand grinding take?

More than pressing a button, every shot, and more at espresso fineness than for filter. Neither 1Zpresso nor KINGrinder publishes a grinding time and we have not timed one, so we will not guess at seconds. Whether it is fine depends mostly on how many drinks you make.

Can a hand grinder keep up with milk drinks for two every day?

Capacity is not the problem: 1Zpresso lists 35–40 g for the J-Ultra and KINGrinder 25–30 g for the K6, enough for a double shot. Effort is: two people with two drinks each means four rounds of grinding a day. At that point an electric grinder starts to earn its price.

Which grinders also do filter coffee?

1Zpresso describes the K-Ultra as an all-rounder for every brew method, while the J-Ultra is espresso-focused. Baratza’s Encore ESP grinds for espresso and filter, and Fellow sells the Opus 2 as an all-purpose grinder.

When does it make sense to move from a hand grinder to an electric?

When grinding stops being part of the fun, or you make several drinks a day. A hand grinder keeps its use afterward as a travel or decaf grinder. The most-mentioned grinder in the r/espresso buying threads we sampled is the Turin DF54, $212 from the US Turin store.
