The best grinder for the Breville Bambino

By · Updated · What changed

The Bambino and Bambino Plus brew the same way: per Breville, both use a 54 mm portafilter dosed with 18 g of coffee, and both come with single-wall and dual-wall (pressurized) baskets. So the same grinders suit both. What changes is how much you want to spend and whether you mind grinding by hand.

Every grinder below is in our data as able to grind for espresso, and passes the same pairing rule as our quiz: priced between 15% and 150% of the machine. Specs come from the makers’ pages unless marked; prices are retailer snapshots. We have not used these grinders ourselves.

Which basket, and why the grinder matters

Use the single-wall baskets once you have a real grinder. Breville recommends them for freshly ground beans, because grind, dose and tamp then change the shot. The dual-wall baskets regulate the pressure themselves, which Breville says helps the extraction regardless of grind, dose, tamp or freshness. They are fine with pre-ground coffee, but they hide most of what a better grinder adds.

For single-wall baskets the grinder needs to go fine and adjust in small steps. The community-run Espresso Aficionados guide says small grind changes can move a shot by 5–10 seconds, which is why capable espresso grinders have micro-steps or stepless adjustment, and that no grinder under $100 new grinds fine or consistently enough for unpressurized baskets.

Questions

Do the Bambino and Bambino Plus need different grinders?

No. Per Breville they share the 54 mm portafilter, the 18 g dose and the same single-wall and dual-wall baskets, so the same grinders suit both. Our pairing rule scales with the machine’s price, so with the Plus it also allows grinders up to about $750, against about $450 with the Bambino.

Can I use pre-ground coffee with a Bambino?

Yes, in the dual-wall baskets, which Breville includes for pre-ground coffee. For the single-wall baskets you need a grinder that can grind for espresso; Espresso Aficionados says no grinder under $100 new grinds fine or consistently enough for unpressurized baskets.

Hand or electric grinder for a Bambino?

A hand grinder is what keeps a Bambino setup under $500, and suits one or two drinks a day. An electric grinder at about $200 puts the total right at $500 or a little over, and makes sense if you make several drinks a day. Our hand vs. electric guide compares them in detail.

Is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro a good match for the Bambino?

It is the obvious pairing from the same brand, but we would look elsewhere. Espresso Aficionados lists it under “Not Recommended”, its 60 steps are coarse for espresso, and our scoring ranks it last of the grinders that fit either Bambino.
