Methodology
How we choose.
Dialed is a data and rules-based guide. We list 31 machines and 24 grinders, priced at 13 US shops and manufacturer stores. Specs are compiled from manufacturer pages and checked against retailer listings; the fit tags and quality scores are our editorial judgment. We do not run hands-on reviews, and nobody pays for placement.
Every recommendation comes from a short, deterministic program. The same answers always give the same result, and every number it uses is listed below.
1. Build every sensible combination
Machines with a built-in grinder (including super-automatics) stand alone. Every other machine is paired with every grinder that is a sensible match for it:
- The grinder must be capable of espresso.
- It must cost at least 15% of the machine, so a great machine is never held back by a weak grinder.
- It must cost no more than 1.5× the machine, so an entry machine is not paired with an end-game grinder.
2. Apply hard filters
- Budget. Machine plus grinder must fit your total budget. For products that ship from abroad with import charges collected on delivery (the Niche grinders), we use the estimated landed cost, not the checkout price. If nothing sensible fits, we say so and show the nearest setup (up to 40% over) rather than an unbalanced one.
- Space. Small counters get only small machines; “some room” excludes large ones.
- Drinks. Mostly-milk drinkers need good or great steaming. If you drink both, the machine has to steam at all.
- Workflow. Push-button means a super-automatic or an assisted one-box machine. Super-automatics are excluded if you want to be hands-on. Manual levers only appear if you enjoy dialing in or tinkering.
- Availability. A setup is never the best match if every retailer listed the machine or grinder as unavailable on our price date. It may still appear as an alternate, clearly labeled.
3. Score what is left
Taste is a blend of an editorial machine score and grinder score (0–10). Products new to our list are not scored yet; for ranking only, they borrow the median score of their price tier. We never show that stand-in as a score. The blend depends on your drinks: straight shots weight the grinder more (55%), milk drinks weight the machine more (60%).
We also want the grinder to take a sensible share of the total: 30%–45% for straight espresso, 25%–45% for a bit of both, and 20%–45% for mostly milk.
4. Pick alternates
- Step up: the highest-scoring setup that costs more, up to 25% over your budget, and scores better. Always labeled when it is over budget.
- Save $: the best setup that costs at most 85% of the best match.
Scoring weights.
Positive numbers add points; negative numbers subtract them.
| Rule | Weight |
|---|---|
| Multiplied by the blended machine + grinder quality (0–10; tier median for products not yet scored) | +3 |
| Taste multiplier when you pick “Best taste” | +1.4 |
| Steaming ability, scaled 0–1 (×1.5 for mostly-milk drinkers) | +2 |
| Automatic milk, for push-button and learning users who drink milk | +2 |
| Temperature control, for straight-shot drinkers | +1.5 |
| Super-automatic, for hands-on straight-shot drinkers | -3 |
| Paying for automatic milk you will not use | -1 |
| Per step the machine is harder than you asked for | -3 |
| Per step the machine is simpler than you want | -1.5 |
| Super-automatic, when you asked for push-button | +12 |
| Assisted machine with automatic milk, when you asked for push-button | +3 |
| Flow control, for tinkerers | +2.5 |
| Upgrade path, for tinkerers | +1 |
| Stepless grinder, for people who enjoy dialing in | +0.5 |
| Per 10 points the grinder’s share is outside the target range | -2 |
| One box (built-in grinder), for push-button and learning users | +2 |
| Built-in grinder when you pick taste or room to grow | -3 |
| Multiplied by how much of your budget the setup uses (0–1) | +4 |
| Multiplied by the share of budget left over, when you pick “Value” | +6 |
| Each priority the setup matches (quiet, speed, looks, room to grow) | +2 |
| One of our editorial starter pairings | +1.5 |
| The machine’s editorial tags match your drink style | +1 |
| Some specs still to confirm | -0.5 |
Where the facts come from
How sure we are.
For every product we compiled the core specs (heating, temperature control, steam, portafilter, tank, size and weight, warm-up for machines; burrs, adjustment, retention, hopper and weight for grinders) from the manufacturer’s own page first, then checked them against retailer listings and owner consensus. Each product card shows the result as a short label:
- Specs from the maker
- Every core spec comes from the manufacturer’s own page. 9 of 55 products
- Specs mostly confirmed
- Every core spec is sourced, some only from retailer listings. 13 of 55 products
- A few specs unconfirmed
- At least one core spec is unconfirmed, or sources disagree. Product pages name the open specs. 33 of 55 products
- Prices and stock were read from each retailer on Oct 27, 2026. Where a product is on sale we show the sale price and the list price (MSRP).
- What we list. We ranked products by how often they come up in r/espresso buying-advice posts (Sep 2–Oct 27, 2026, 2,000 posts) and their comment threads. 17 products are kept out of the site for low demand, being out of stock, pre-order only or discontinued. See what changed.
- Unscored products. 16 newer products have no editorial quality score yet. They are ranked with their price tier’s median and never shown with a number.
- Import charges. Niche Zero and Niche Duo ship from the UK. Niche warns that US customs charge around 35% in tariffs and handling on delivery, so we estimate landed cost at ×1.35 (Zero ≈ $930, Duo ≈ $1,050) and use that for budget fit.
- Quality scores and fit tags are editorial judgments, not measurements. Specs may still contain errors; check the manufacturer before you buy.
