The best espresso setup under $2,500

By · Updated · What changed

At $2,500 you are choosing between dual boilers, E61 heat exchangers and premium single boilers, paired with a grinder that will not hold them back. This is where milk drinks get easy: brew and steam at the same time, with steam power to spare.

The picks below come from the same written rules as our quiz, run with fixed answers for each scenario, and each fits under $2,500 including the grinder.

Our top pick.

For a bit of both, some counter room, and someone happy to learn.

Questions

Dual boiler or heat exchanger?

Both brew and steam at once. A dual boiler controls brew temperature directly, which is more precise for light roasts. A heat exchanger is simpler and often has more steam power, but brew temperature takes a little technique to manage.

Do I need a 64 mm or larger grinder?

Not necessarily. A 55 mm Mignon-class grinder is a very good match for machines at this level. Larger burrs mostly pay off for light roasts and straight espresso.

Is it worth stretching to $3,000?

Only if you know what you would gain. Our results page shows a “Step up” option within about 25% of your budget and spells out what the extra money buys.

Are these prices current?
